Description
The first State of the World’s Volunteerism Report: Universal Values for Global Well-being, recently released by United Nations Volunteers (UNV), cautions that “too often, the strong links are overlooked between volunteer activity on the one hand and peace and human development on the other.” Recognizing volunteerism as “one of the missing components of a development paradigm that has economic growth at its core,” the publication calls for greater attention for volunteerism in the development discourse and aims to emphasize that volunteerism is a “powerful” means for progress and for people to shape their own lives, communities and societies. The report explains that since the International Year of Volunteerism (IYV) in 2001, as well as with the adoption of the UN General Assembly’s Resolution 56/38 in the same year, interest in better understanding and promoting volunteerism has grown in various sectors of society, including governments, academics, media, etcetera.
